10 Tips to Guide Graduates in the Next Phase of Life
Graduation is a significant milestone, marking the transition to a new chapter of growth and opportunities. Recently, I had the privilege of addressing a graduating class, and I am sharing these insights to guide those of you moving forward into the next phase of your academic or professional journey.
1. Your History Does Not Define Your Destiny
Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. As William Jennings Bryan put it:
“Destiny is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved.”
Past successes, while commendable, do not guarantee future achievements. Take charge of your destiny by designing the future you desire and putting in the effort to make it happen.
2. You Run Things
- No one can prevent you from learning if you are determined.
- No one can make you learn if you lack the will.
Blaming external factors for failures is an easy trap. Students often claim they cannot learn because a teacher dislikes them. I counter with this question: “Do the artists whose songs you memorize know or like you?” Priorities define outcomes—focus on what truly matters.
3. Discipline Is the Key
Walter Bagehot once said:
“The most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not.”
Education is about building habits of discipline and responsibility. Excuses made during school years can linger into adulthood, but overcoming these tendencies leads to greater personal growth. Resist the lure of instant gratification and develop resilience instead.
4. Education Determines How Far You Go
The modern “New Work Order” demands advanced skills and adaptability. If future generations only achieve the same educational level as their predecessors, they may struggle to maintain the standard of living they were raised with. Stay ahead by embracing continuous learning.
5. Success = Education + Training + Attitude
The HEART Trust succinctly states:
“Education makes you trainable, training makes you employable, but attitude makes you successful.”
A bad attitude can derail even the most skilled individuals. Academic pursuits combined with technical training and a positive mindset create a foundation for lasting success.
6. Embrace Lifelong Learning
You are likely to change careers six times in your lifetime. Jobs of the future will require new competencies, so continuous learning is essential. Equip yourself and your children with a mindset of curiosity and adaptability.
7. Exposure Fuels Skill Development
Skills don’t develop magically—they follow a cycle:
Exposure → Awareness → Interest → Skill
Broaden horizons by creating opportunities for exposure. Parents and educators must ensure diverse experiences to sow the seeds of future competence and mastery.
8. Privilege Can Open Doors, But Effort Keeps Them Open
Your family’s name or status might provide opportunities, but only your effort and integrity will secure long-term success. Privileged circumstances are not a guarantee of achievement; they are a starting point for building your legacy.
9. Choose Friends Wisely
As you transition into new environments, you’ll encounter individuals who may not have your best interests at heart. Be discerning in your friendships and seek those who encourage your growth and values. Parents, guide your children in understanding the importance of making the right choices.
10. Use Your Talents Wisely
Your talents are gifts from God, and what you do with them is your gift back to Him. Reflect on the Parable of the Talents in the Bible, which underscores the responsibility to use one’s abilities for good. Bob Marley and The Wailers also captured this truth:
“Live for yourself, you live in vain.
Live for others, you will live again.”

These guiding principles can help graduates navigate the complexities of life while striving for excellence and fulfillment. Embrace this next phase with determination, gratitude, and a commitment to lifelong growth.
