The Semaj MindSpa — Where Mind, Spirit, and Science Meet

Here is Part 2 of my Semaj MindSpa blog, building on “Storm-Proof Living: What If You Chose to Own Nothing?” and now weaving in the deeper spiritual dimension of following Jesus Christ—not simply as religious adherence, but as a way of living, working, and being anchored in freedom.

You began this journey asking: What if I owned nothing? What if ownership no longer defined your sense of security, your identity, your value? In the first post you saw how storms (literal or metaphorical) expose how fragile our attachments are. You were invited to ask: If I lost that asset, would I lose myself?

Here I want to walk with you further. I want to show how the radical invitation of Jesus offers a way not just out of things, but into a new kind of life—a life of freedom, purpose, and alignment.

In the Gospel we read:

“Jesus Christ told him, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.’” (Bible Gateway)

That command is startling. It runs against our cultural grain of accumulate-more, hold-fast, defend-assets. It demands a turn: away from what holds us, toward who leads us.

1. What it means to sell or own nothing

When Jesus says “sell what you possess,” it’s not merely about liquidation of assets. It’s about detaching your heart from possessions so they no longer dictate your identity or security. The still-voice inside you asks: What am I relying on other than God? What do I clutch so tightly that I cannot move when the wind blows?

In the first post I wrote: “Freedom doesn’t come from what we own. It comes from what we no longer need to hold on to.” That insight aligns with the gospel. To follow Jesus means to risk being portable—emotionally and spiritually—not anchored solely in bricks and titles.

2. “Follow Me” — What diving deeper really means

Following Jesus is not about signing up for a religion. It is a total re-orientation of one’s life, values, work, relationships, and priorities. When He invites “come, follow Me,” He is saying: walk where I walk; live how I live; let my agenda become yours.

This means:

  • In work, your identity is not first “boss,” “owner,” “wealth-builder,” but “follower,” “servant,” “worker with purpose.”
  • In possessions, you carry lightly; you are ready to release, ready to shift, ready to serve.
  • In life purpose, you seek the “kingdom” (the reign of love, justice, mercy) rather than the “kingdom” of accumulation.
  • In relationships, you centre not on what people can give you, but on what you can give, on how you can follow His pattern of compassion, humility, service.

Thus following Jesus is much more than adopting an extra-morality or ethical code. It is diving into His life-way: the way of surrender, freedom, detachment, service. It’s the opposite of “religion”-as-list-of-dos; it is relationship, alignment, movement.

3. “Own Nothing” + “Follow Him” = Storm-Proof Life

When the storm hits—whether a financial collapse, a business loss, a marriage breakdown, or the frailty of ageing—what holds? If you’ve built your life on what you own, the storm will shake you to the core. But if your life is built on the One you follow, and you hold your possessions loosely, then:

  • You can pivot more easily.
  • You can serve where you’re needed, not where your assets anchor you.
  • You can live with less fear, because your security is not the externals but the internal: a faith-rooted resilience.
  • You experience purpose beyond status-symbols; you hold treasures in heaven rather than on earth. (See also Jesus: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth …” – Matthew 6:19-20) (GotQuestions.org)

4. How this translates into your life today

With decades of experience—and now in the “anchor-leg of life” phase – I am in a powerful place to embody this. I have walked the path of ownership, identity, health, fitness; I have built a career; I now face the new frontier of transformation and legacy. Here are practical translations:

  • Audit your “holds”: What possessions, roles, titles, assets are holding you? What would you be willing to release today if the call came?
  • Anchor your work in following: My consulting, my writing, my workshops – I see them not merely as services, but as expressions of “following Jesus” in how I lead, teach, and serve. That means integrity, sacrifice, relational depth, putting people and purpose ahead of profit or prestige.
  • Hold loosely as you age: There will be fewer physical anchors—health vulnerabilities, maybe less capacity, shifting roles. But you can lean into the spiritual anchor. Living with less, serving with more, releasing what you once clung to.
  • Build treasures in heaven: Not an excuse for poverty, but a clarity of orientation. Your “treasures” become lives touched, transformations effected, people released—not just bank balances or owned houses.

5. A Closing Reflection Exercise

  • List 3 roles or possessions you could ‘sell’ metaphorically or literally that would free you to follow more fully.
  • Ask: If I lost this tomorrow, would I lose myself? If yes, what does that tell me about my identity?
  • Consider: What would following Jesus look like today if I built this week’s schedule around His way rather than mine?
  • Pray or meditate: “Lord Jesus, teach me to live not for what I own, but for whom I follow. Let my work honour You, let my possessions not possess me, let my life be storm-proof not because I own much, but because I walk with You.”

In the end, the gospel calls not simply for less ownership—but for more authentic living. It invites you into a journey of freedom: free from what holds you, free for what matters. Free to follow—follow Him.

If this lands with you, I invite you to reflect, journal, and when you’re ready, let’s talk about how your encore career, your writing, your transformations can be built on this foundation of following—not just owning.

Until then, may you move forward with freedom, purpose, and grace.
