“Look for me in a whirlwind or a storm!” – Marcus Garvey
Some names carry power.
Some birthdays carry destiny.
And sometimes, the circumstances of your birth whisper a deeper calling.
I was born during Hurricane Charley.
I was born on August 17—the birthday of Marcus Mosiah Garvey. (2026 is the 139th anniversary of his birth and the 75th of mine). The storm and the man have shaped the rhythm of my life.
Marcus Garvey did not simply leave a legacy; he left a prophecy.
His voice still echoes across time:
“Look for me in a whirlwind or a storm!”
From early in life, I came to believe that the time and manner of one’s birth are never random. They carry messages, symbols, patterns waiting to be understood. I was not just born during a storm—I am the storm. Or at least, I strive to be a force of transformation in a world often stuck in cycles of injustice, ignorance, and complacency.
To honor that calling, I turned my name around.
Michael James became Leahcim Tufani Semaj—
Leahcim, a mirror of Michael,
Tufani, Swahili for “storm,”
Semaj, James reversed.
The transformation of my name was not merely cosmetic—it was symbolic.
A declaration.
A commitment.
A promise to myself and to the spirit of Garvey that I would carry the storm forward. Not one of destruction, but of awakening. Not chaos, but consciousness.
In academia, I challenged the old paradigms.
In media, I sought to be a voice for truth, equity, and clarity.
In consulting, I became a catalyst for transformation—disrupting toxic patterns in institutions and igniting new visions in leaders.
Marcus Garvey taught us to think beyond the moment, to see beyond borders, and to believe in the greatness within us. He gave us a blueprint for pride, purpose, and power. But above all, he gave us a challenge: to rise.

And so I rise—not with arrogance, but with alignment.
Not with noise, but with purpose.
Not just for myself, but for all who know they were born with more to give, more to do, and more to become.
If Garvey was the whirlwind, I am one of the gusts still moving through this world, turning things around—one mind, one heart, one system at a time.
And so I say:
Garvey lives—not just in books, statues, or holidays—
He lives in me.
