Some days ago I told you about the 67-year-old widower in Kingston and Fort Lauderdale. He wrote: “I love them both. Am I a bad man?” I told him he was not a bad man. He was an unfinished man. And I gave him my protocol for truth – how to have the conversation without blowing up his life. This week, my inbox exploded. Not from men. From women.
“Doc, I had that conversation. Let me tell you what happened next.” I want to share three real responses – names and places changed – because if you are planning to have the conversation, you need to know what truth sounds like on the other side.
First, Remember What We Asked Him to Do
We asked him to have it on a Tuesday afternoon, fully clothed, not after sex, not in an argument. To use ownership language: “I have been unclear because I was afraid to choose.” And to bring the four questions: Exclusivity, Money, Health, Exit. He did. In fact, three different men who read the article did. Here is what happened.
Woman #1: Miss Gloria in Kingston – The Relief Response
She is 64. Retired principal. Together with him for two years. Sunday cook. When he told her about Fort Lauderdale, she was quiet for a long time. Then she said: “Thank you for finally telling me the truth. I knew. Women always know. I smelled the perfume on the shirt you brought back from Miami. I saw how you always turned your phone face down. I was just waiting to see if you would respect me enough to tell me.”
She did not shout. She did not cry. She felt relief. Why? Because ambiguity is more exhausting than bad news. For months she was doing detective work – checking his WhatsApp last seen, asking his driver, asking her sister to drive by his house. That work is tiring. Truth, even painful truth, ends the detective work.
What did she do next? She gave him the Chosen Woman Protocol. She said: “I am willing to build one honest life with you. But I have conditions. One: You end the other relationship with dignity in the next 14 days. Not a ghosting. A honest closure. Two: You give me access. Not to control you, but so I don’t have to be a detective again. Your phone stays face up in my house. Three: We go to Dr. Semaj for one session to write down our money and health story. If you cannot do that, then you have already chosen.”
He did it. He called the woman in Fort Lauderdale. It was hard. She cried. But he did it with respect. And Gloria and he are now in a Deep-Dive with me, writing their next chapter.
The Lesson from Gloria: Many women over 60 are not looking for perfection. They are looking for the relief of clarity and the dignity of being chosen.
Woman #2: Miss Patricia in Fort Lauderdale – The Rage and Release Response
She is 61. Divorced. Works in healthcare in Florida. She thought she was his only one. She was planning to file for him to spend more time in the US. When he told her – on Zoom, because he followed my advice and did not do it by text – her response was different.
“So I am the travel woman? The convenient woman? You eat Sunday dinner in Kingston and then come here to be serviced? You think I left my husband and raised two children to be somebody’s second option?”
She raged. And she had a right to rage. For two days she did not take his calls. On the third day she sent a voice note – and I have permission to quote part of it:
“I am not angry that you loved another woman. I am angry that you let me build a future on a lie. You watched me look at apartments where we could live. You watched me tell my sister about you. And you said nothing. That is not loneliness. That is cowardice.”
Then she did something powerful. She released him.
“I release you. Not because you are a bad man. Because I am a woman who wants a whole man. Not half a man on a rotation schedule. Go and be whole with Gloria. Or go and be whole alone. But don’t come back here half.”
He is hurting. He thought Patricia would be the easier one to keep. She was not. She was the one with the clearest boundary.
The Lesson from Patricia: Women over 60 have less time to waste. They will not spend their precious Anchor Leg years auditioning for a role that is already cast. Rage is often the doorway to release. And release is a form of self-respect.
Woman #3: The Silent One – No Response Is A Response
A third woman – I will call her Miss D – did not respond at all when her ‘man’ confessed to her.
He told her on a Tuesday. She listened. She said “Okay.” She packed the food she had cooked for him and gave it to him to take home. And she has not answered her phone since.
He keeps calling. He drives by. Her daughter says, “Mummy said she is tired.”
Silence after truth is not confusion. It is a complete sentence. It says: “I have heard you. I have understood that you cannot choose me fully. And I am choosing myself by not engaging further.”
In psychology we call this a self-protective shutdown. After 60, many women have learned that arguing with a man who has already shown you his pattern is a waste of life force. They go quiet and they rebuild.
He is learning the hardest lesson: Sometimes when you finally tell the truth, the consequence is not forgiveness. It is absence.
So, How Did The Women Respond? A Summary for Men Who Are About to Have This Conversation
If you are the man who loved two women, here is what you must prepare for:
1. Expect relief, not just rage. She probably knew. Or suspected. Your truth ends her detective work.
2. Expect grief to come in waves. Day 1 may be calm. Day 3 may be rage. Day 7 may be tears. Give her space. Do not defend. Listen.
3. Expect a test of choice. Almost every woman in this age group will say, “Show me you chose me.” That means action, not words. End the other relationship with dignity. Make your phone, your time, your house transparent.
4. Expect that choosing one may mean losing both. And that is the price of having lived in ambiguity. You must be willing to pay it to become a whole man again.
And For Women Reading This – The Semaj Protocol for Receiving Truth
If he comes to you with truth, here is how to receive it without losing yourself:
Step 1: Breathe. Don’t decide in the same hour. Say, “Thank you for telling me. I need 48 hours to sit with this before I respond.” Do not make a lifelong decision on a flood of cortisol.
Step 2: Ask the clarity question: “What do you want to create now that you have told the truth?” If he says “I don’t know” or “I want to keep both,” you have your answer.
Step 3: State your non-negotiables. Use my 4 questions. What do you need on exclusivity, money, health, and exit? If he cannot meet your minimums, loving him is not enough.
You are not too old to have standards. You are too wise to live without them.
MindSpa Practice: The Response Letter (You Don’t Send)
Tonight, for both men and women:
Write a letter to the person who hurt or confused you. Write everything – the rage, the disappointment, the love, the grief.
Then at the bottom, write this:
“What I am choosing for myself from this point forward is…”
Read it aloud to yourself. Burn it or keep it. But do not send it until you have slept on it. This letter is not for them. It is for you to hear your own voice again.
Closing: What Happened to the Man?
The 67-year-old widower? He is alone right now. Not with Kingston. Not with Fort Lauderdale.
Gloria told him she needs 90 days to see if his actions match his words. Patricia has released him. He is in a strange, quiet house that feels too big.
He told me yesterday, “Doc, this is the first time in two years I have slept through the night without hiding my phone. I am lonely. But I am at peace. For the first time, I am not managing. I am living.”
That, my friends, is the beginning of being finished.
The best is yet to come – but only after truth.
